Watford Water Polo U17′s claim Silver medal in ASA NAG’s Plate final

U17′s claimed the Silver medal as they narrowly lost the NAG’s plate final today against Bridgefield 3-2. Having negotiated the group stages with easy the team lost out in the final to the narrowest of margins.

The team started the day against Cheltenham and in an opening first half the team took a 4-2 lead with goals from Djorjdic, Morris, Steinberg & Page. Into the second half & the team extended their lead to 7-2 thanks to strikes from Nikhil & Rushil Patel and Miles Yates, Cheltenham then hit a consolation before Chapman hit the teams eighth & final goal.

The second group game of the day was against Manchester B team & in a one sided contest the team strolled to a 13-2 victory, highlight of the game was  four goals for Adam Page & a hat-trick for Nikhil Patel.

The final group game was against Grantham & again the team got off to a good start winning the opening half 5-2, Djordjic with two, Page, Nikhil Patel & Atkinson doing the damage. The second half saw Watford score a further four goals to win the game 9-3 & with it the group & progress into the final.

The final against Group A winners Bridgefield was a real tight affair as Watford took the lead via Djordjic butwere pegged back at 1-1 with .43 seconds of the half remaining, HT 1-1.

Into the second half & Bridgefield snatched the lead at 2-1 before Page levelled the game again at 2-2 but with 2.03 mins remaining Bridgefield scored their third for 3-2 & held on to claim the gold medal.

Head Coach Edi Brkovic commented after the final game:

“My team should be proud of what they have achieved against older teams, making the final winning all the group games was special & to play the way they did in the final was brilliant, it was a shame to lose but Bridgefield did well to win it”.

Watford U17’s team for weekend was be made up from mostly our 2002 squad as this will give our younger team some invaluable NAG’s experience ahead of next year’s NAG’s 2002 competition:
