Watford Water Polo 2nds claim Winter League Div Two title

Watford 2nds claimed the Winter league title for the third time in four seasons with an emphatic 25-17 win over Reading last Thursday evening the win also meant the team went through the season winning all eight games. The team entered March having to play five matches in twelve days to finish the season & having won their opening three matches of the season back in November & December the team lay seven points off leaders Avondale and had a tough task.

The first game of the five match run was against Reading and the team started on the front foot taking the first half 9-5, Wayne Davis, Andy Holt & Matt Irish all grab a brace each in the opening half. The second half was much the same as Watford ran in a further nine goals to finish the match 18-9 winners & the hunt for the title was on.

The next game was meant to be at home to Avondale but the South London side couldn’t raise a team so the points were awarded to the hosts.

The next game was against Chelmsford & in a one side contest Watford strolled to victory and won comfortably 9-1. The points moved Watford into second place one point behind Avondale.

Two games to go & victory at home to Enfield & the title was secured, in a cagey opening first half when both sides won a quarter each 3-2, half time was reached at 5-5. into the second half & Watford stepped up the workrate and won the third quarter 6-3 & the final quarter 8-3 to claim a 19-11 victory & the title.

So the final game of the season & a trip to Reading with the title in the bag another victory would give Watford a 100% winning season. The opening quarter was truly a goal feast as Watford edged a thirteen goal quarter to edge it 7-6. The second quarter was all Watford as the team put eight past a hapless Reading defence for a HT score of 15-8. The thrid period & both teams took a breath in the goal spree but each side still managed 3 each to move the scores onto 18-11. The final period saw a repeat of the first and another thirteen goals Watford again edged it at 7-6 & finished the game 25-17 winners. Andy Holt hit Ten & Sam Carling eight in this entertaining encounter.

So eight games & eight victories, 118 goals & the Winter League Div Two title for a third time in four seasons.
