European Masters - London 2016

A number of Masters from Hertfordshire Clubs took part in the European Masters Aquatics Championships 25th - 29th May 2016 at the London Aquatics Centre, many thanks to Janet Gardiner our former President for pulling together a report and a list of results.

There are only two diving clubs in Herts, Beaumont and Dacorum, but both have a thriving Masters section, and both had divers who competed at the Europeans. The diving events are 1m springboard, 3m springboard, and Platform.

The diver who competed in all three events and was most successful was Katie Bell of Dacorum who achieved 2 silvers and a gold medal, and the other diver who competed in three events was Mike Kempson of Beaumont. He came away from the competition with a bronze and a silver medal.

Of those who stuck to the springboard events, the most successful were Jim McNally and Hayley Sage who came away with two gold medals apiece.
All divers came home with at least one Bronze medal.

In this report there is NO mention of relays. Whilst some clubs have sent the “Lead off” leg time in the relays and they haven’t said what age group the relay was, others haven’t so it is better to exclude all relays consequently only individual events are mentioned.

Although competitors were limited to a maximum of three individual events, there were still some very long queues, very short and crowded warm-ups, and almost half the events were held in the warm-up pool rather than the iconic Olympic competition pool. Despite these challenges, there was some fantastic swimming from Hertfordshire masters swimmers. Chris Dunn (70-74yrs - Hatfield) won gold medals in all three of his events – 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle – breaking his own British and European record for the 200 event. Three Hertfordshire masters came home with two medals apiece. Lizzie Bellinger (Bishops Stortford, 35-39yrs) swam very close to her British record to win gold in the 50m fly, and won silver in the 100m fly. In a very exciting race, Sally Winter (55-59yrs), also from Bishops Stortford, was victorious in the 100m free and gained a bronze medal in the 200m free. Daryl Mason (Potters Bar, 45-49yrs) sprinted hard to win a silver medal in the 50m fly and a bronze in the 50m breast.

It is inevitable that the majority swam at the weekend so they could go to work during the week; it maybe that swimmers chose the events at the weekend, rather than compete in the events during the week. All events had some Hertfordshire swimmers other than 200 fly.
