Water Polo Update - July/August 2015

The Herts League enters July and a further Six games have been completed, 4 games in Division One & 2 in Division Two plus a quarter final round of the Herts KO Cup in early August.

In Division One


In early July Hatfield bounced back to winning ways with a convincing home win over Bedford winning the match 12-3. Eight days later & Bedford made the trip to Spalding for their second game of the season but a disappointing 14-7 loss had the Bedford team having played two & lost two.

In late July Watford entertained Hatfield at Woodside & with both sides having fought out a very close game in June which Watford won 6-5, Hatfield were out for revenge & came to Woodside looking to pull off a win & dent Watford’s 100% winning run so far this season.

The first half was nip & tuck and by the end of the first quarter the sides were level at 3-3. Into the second period & twice Watford took a two goal lead at 5-3 & 6-4 only for Hatfield to level the game again at 6-6 but 56 seconds remaining of the first half Watford edged in from again for a 7-6 lead.

Into the third period & Hatfield won the quarter 4-3 for a 10-10 scoreline,

The final period & all to play for as Watford went in search of their fourth straight win & a three goal blast inside 3 minutes gave the hosts a 13-10 lead, Hatfield hit back with two goals of their own to narrow the gap to within one at 13-12 but with 2.33 mins to play another goal for Watford gave them the lead at 14-12 lead & the hosts hung on to claim a hard fought victory & maintain their 100% winning run in th league this season.

Two days later & Hatfield made the trip to play Spalding at the Castle Sports complex after the first quarter Hatfield were leading 3-1 & by half time after a 2-2 second quarter Hatfield remained in front at 5-3.

Into the second half & both teams were determined to win the game, Spalding hit the first goal of the second half to narrow the gap to 4-5 but back came Hatfield & with a double strike from the Waller brothers Alex & Richard extended their teams lead to 4-7 however Spalding were done & a goal with 44 secs remaining of the third period kept the sides at 5-7.

Into the final period & Spalding mounted a really challenge to get back into the game & after 5.15 mins play they had leveled the game at 7-7 the equalizing goal came after the Hatfield goalie committed a major foul & gave Spalding a penalty which was converted by J Carpenter. With 1.42 mins remaining both sides couldn’t find a winner & the game finished all square at 7-7.

In Division Two

Two games played in June & both involved Cambridge, the first in early July was away against Hitchin however Cambridge couldn’t field a team & therefore conceded the fixture to Hitchin however four days later in the return fixture Cambridge did manage to field a team & they beat Hitchin at Parkside Pool 12-7.

Herts KO Cup

Two quarter final matches have now been completed & in the first Dunstable traveled to the Hartham Pool & came away with a 23-18 victory & will now face the winners of the Cambridge v Hatfield tie for a place in November’s Final.

The other quarter final game completed so far saw Watford defeat Spalding at Woodside in early August. Spalding traveled with only eight players & found the going tough & eventually lost the game 28-8. Watford will now play the winners of the Bedford v Northampton tie at home for a place in this year’s final.
