Herts ASA U16 Girls Water Polo Team Compete in South East Counties Tournament

On Sunday 15/12/13 an U16 Hertfordshire girls team played in the South East Counties tournament at Whitgift School in Croyden. The Herts team consisted of players from Bishop Stortford, Hertford and Watford water polo clubs. For all but 5 of the 13 girl team this was their first official competitive tournament at this level furthermore the majority of the players are U14 girls. The first game was against Sussex and ended in a 7 - 0 defeat, then came Surrey and the game started in a similar fashion, however in the 2nd period we found our feet and only conceded 2 goals but this still ended in a 6 - 0 defeat. The third game was against Kent and although the team did start to develop some better polo the final score was a 6 - 1 defeat. Finally they played Middlesex and at the end of the first period were only 5 - 2 down but ran out of steam in the 2nd period losing 8 - 2.

Considering their limited experience, young age and the fact that they were sometimes up against players with International experience the tournament was a tough but a positive experience, there was also a very visible improvement in their play throughout the tournament. All of the girls played with a great attitude and it is difficult to single out players but Laura Marsh made some great saves in goal, Louise Lowy made life difficult for the players that she was marking in defence and Rhiannon Ellis was always an attacking threat. This all bodes well for girls water polo in Hertfordshire.
